It's
often hard to judge a book by its cover when selecting the right contractor,
but certain things will go a long way toward reassuring you that you've
made the right decision. The company you choose should be licensed and
maintain liability and property damage insurance. It's also a good idea
to enquire about the qualifications of the tradespeople, and if the company
is a member in good standing of the Better Business Bureau. Lastly, any
company worth considering should be able to supply you with letters of
reference from satisfied homeowners.
Costs can vary considerably between homebuilders, but just remember that
choosing a bargain-basement company rarely means you'll be getting more
for less. Quotations that end up too far toward the lower end of the price
spectrum are usually indicative of an inexperienced estimator - someone
who forgot to factor in certain materials, who is unable to estimate properly
or who does not employ qualified tradespeople. Do a bit of homework to
determine fair market prices, and ask questions about any item that falls
too far below the norm.
